Hey there everyone,

So I’m sitting here packing my bags for the amazing and much-needed thanksgiving break when it occurred to me that the semester is almost over. And holding true to my promise, I will be stepping down as President of SOMA at the start of next semester so that I can help it run from more of an adviser role. Please don’t cry anyone, haha. Its for the right reasons. I’d be happy running SOMA for the rest of my life (honestly), but the best thing for SOMA is for it to run on its own for a while. Its been three years since Mitch, Justin, Henry, and I founded SOMA, I can finally say that its at a place where it can run itself. We’ve got the most competent and dedicated group we’ve ever had. So that being said:

SOMA ELECTIONS
Wednesday, November 28th
7:30pm
Room 219 of Thomas

Elections will be held for the following positions- all of them are for the Spring08-Fall08 term:
1) President- Oversees all of the different other officer’s to ensure that events come to fruition and events get promoted
2) Vice-President- Assists President in overseeing other members and helps run meetings with Prez
3) Treasurer- Keeps track of how much money is in our account- handles the big bucks- helps raise money
4) Secretary- Writes down meeting summaries/notes and then emails them out to the group
5) PR Chair- Gets people to make flyers, then gets flyers printed 1 week before show- brings people together to hang flyers- generally promotes SOMA events in other ways
6) Webmaster/Historian- Publishes new information on psusoma.com and writes down thoughts on events- good for slightly techie people who also like going to SOMA events
7) Fundraising/Membership Chair- Recruits new members at beginnings of semesters- Does at least one money raising event each semester- Seeks out bands and artists in community for our events
*All positions require that you attend meetings when reasonably possible (officer meetings mondays, general meetings 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of month)

For all you observant SOMA members out there, you will notice that we just had some elections like a month ago. The secretary position was an interim secretary position. Anyone is now able to run for any position they would like. However, the following chairs/positions are not up for grabs because they are for the Fall07-Spring08 term (although these guys are more than welcome to hold 2 positions):

Erin Stolz- Arts Crawl Chair
Michelle Mancini- Arts Crawl Co-Chair
Devin Daniels- Open Mic Co-Chair
Ryan Ulses- Open Mic Co-Chair
Danny Michelson- Synthesis Chair
[I guess if someone wants to run as a Synthesis Co-Chair that'd be cool too]

So that’s the list of officers. As you can see it takes a lot of people to make SOMA happen. But after 3 years of this I finally found the system that keeps SOMA running smooth and fun, without stressing anyone out. The new positions of Webmaster/Historian and Fundraising/Membership Chair were positions that we’ve thought about for a while. All of these positions are chances to help the cause and are a lot of fun. Please email me/facebook message me at any time if you have any question about the positions.

And Megan, our current secretary has reminded me that we have the Super Special “Secret Santa SOMA CD Swap” coming up when we get back from break. Also in the first week of December we’ll be having a screening of the new Bob Dylan Concert Documentary that came out, and we’ll be having a SOMA Local Music Concert at SOZO. Damn, what a cool club to be a part of.

But yea, you wont be totally rid of me yet, haha. I’ll be around to help people out all next semester, answer questions, make bad jokes…. it’ll be like I never left, haha. Have a great Thanksgiving.

We’re about to embark on a very exciting event that we haven’t attempted since our club had just begun and we were young and naive.  We will be organizing SOMA Synthesis 2008.  This year though we’re smarter and faster, so we’re going to be making music videos for bands to make it an even cooler event.  And we’re going to need people to help make the music videos.  We’re looking for people to film, hold cameras, act, direct, ect.  We’ll accept people of all levels of experience.  Heres how you can be a part:

at 6:30pm in 108 Sackett
Students of all majors welcome

To be a director, you will have to have some kind of portfolio or way of showing that you have experience.  So if you are interested, please show up. Directors should email Danny Michelson at dhm5011@psu.edu to inform him.  We are also still looking for some bands to make videos for.  So if you want to direct or if you are in a band and want your music to made into a video, email dhm5011@psu.edu   ~ This meeting will be the moment when directors pick bands to make videos for and bands pick directors.  So directors and musicians must attend this meeting if they would like to be involved.

However, all other interested people only need to show up and pick directors or bands to work under.  We need tons of people to do all kinds of random stuff, so show up and help make this the best damn event Penn State has ever witnessed.
